Designing and planting your garden to complement your home is incomplete if you don't include a tree or two. You want to find the right tree to blend well into your garden. Small ornamental trees in the right situation can add charm and character to your garden.

All trees are valuable not simply for money or profit, they have much more to offer to the environment. Trees help to sweep the atmosphere providing oxygen and habitats for wildlife and that is not all. Their value and contributions to the environment is manifold.

They help to soften the landscape and enhance the look of open spaces, help to judge scale and distance, particularly around buildings. They screen unsightly buildings or objects. They filter dust and fumes and absorb noise. The come in an assortment of shapes and sizes. They enhance the environment through their flowers, color of leaf, bark and fruit.

By careful planning and planting we are able to soften our harsh surroundings with trees that are useful and ornamental.

Selecting and planting trees is very important. It's quite easy to plant the wrong tree. A tree is both perennial and woody and can be divided into two distinct categories: coniferous and deciduous.

A majority of trees will grow on a wide range of soils, but sometimes there are exceptions.

When embarking on a planting plan decide whether it's going to be one tree or more.

Check your soil's pH to know the type of soil you will be dealing with as this is often vital information for applying the proper methods to establish healthy growth of the trees.

Some common shapes of trees are weeping or pendulous, columnar or fastigate, or conical.

Before planting decide on the size of the tree your garden can accommodate and where you want it to stand. Young trees are vulnerable to both aspect and climate and should be carefully considered before buying. Persistent strong winds and frost will almost certainly damage many species and the risk is increased if it is planted in the wrong situation.

Carefully choose the right tree. Try out something different to what you see in your neighborhood. There's a wealth of specimens that produce gorgeous flowers and fruit. See what's right for you. Many will flower in spring and summer.

Garden trees once established are low in maintenance and the aesthetic appeal will be there for many years with little or no work.

Select from a wide range of many small flowering trees and shrubs such as ornamental pear, rhododendron, forsythia or dogwood. These provide beautiful blooms up to eye level.

Cypress, holly, boxwoods and other ever green shrubs offers color and texture throughout the year.

Maples come in an assortment of leaf hues and make great shade trees for your garden.

Learn how to prune your tree to keep them from growing too tall and instead have them trained to branch out well into a good frame.
